If you are new to St Pete or are deciding which gym may be right for you it can be a daunting task. Over the past couple of years new gyms have opened offering different focuses or aesthetics. St Pete was known for it’s diversity of local boutique studios but there has been a transition to more corporate offerings as well. Here are some St Pete gym reviews to help you get a lay of the land

We have had the opportunity to get into several of these gyms and discover more about the people that run them but we’ll stick to some basics here.

Corporate Big Box

Crunch Fitness Has Conquered

This big box gym came to take on the established likes of Anytime Fitness, Planet Fitness, YouFit and LA Fitness/Esporta. Since the arrival of Crunch locations to St Pete we’ve seen Anytime Fitness shut down and steal the market share of Youfit and Planet Fitness. For good reason. We think they’ve done a great job. With their bright color scheme, large and varied gym spaces plus the best equipment we think they’ve adjusted the standard for big box and rule the space at this time.

There is a locally owned Amped Fitness option which employs a darker color scheme and can be found to be understaffed at times. For a big box this isn’t too important but it can make a difference in the customer service department. Amped boasts 3 different locations in Pinellas County so that is a plus which rivals Crunch. Prices among these competitors is pretty even with LA/Esporta being higher in price due to swimming pool and court access.

SWET Tries to Expand

This local gym has established itself through consistent programming and leadership for the past 4 years. They now eye expansion into Seminole with a new location. The St Pete team operates well and they provide high quality strength training that mimics Crossfit but can be modified to fit your level. The studio is clean, equipment is newer and the coaches help you go through each workout motivating along the way

St Pete boasts many of these style of gyms with slightly different flavors. In the end you have to find the one that fits you best: Brickyard, Elevate and Outdoor Group Fitness offer similar style training and are worth mentioning. Membership prices for these studios range between $150-$200/mo

MA Fitness Kickboxing

You can’t mention gyms in St Pete without acknowledging MA Fitness (Martial Arts Fitness) as they have been operating group kickboxing and strength workouts for over 11 years in the city. The workout is themed differently than anything else in St Pete and while the competitive likes of 9Round and Mayweather Boxing have come and gone this local boutique stands strong.

The 45 minute heavy bag workouts are intense but each person can modulate their exertion or modify movements to see results. They instructors seem invested and can be found working out regularly in classes they aren’t coaching. There are strength workouts, kickboxing, self defense and other specialty classes that keep the training experience interesting. Comparatively, the membership options at MA Fitness are lower than the other boutique gyms with options ranging from $74-$129/mo
